Mandrake

There are few herbs as steeped with Magickal Lore as is the mandragora (aka) Mandrake. (Be aware that some vendors will sell American Mandrake which  is know as Mayapple. This plant is Podophyllum Peltatum and not related).

There is a certain strangeness about the mandrake—its resemblance to the human body and its Latin name mandragora which sounds somehow slightly sinister! In fact the name means “sleep substance” due to the narcotic effect of the root. It can also be called Satan’s apple! All the old witch’s covens take great delight in this root—for our purpose it need not have any sinister significance but simply good uses.

It was once believed that mandrake plants were inhabited by dark-skinned supernatural beings known as mandragoras (“man-dragons”), which were mischievous by nature and often called upon to aid sorcerers and sorceresses in the practice of their craft.
